Studio 3
Product Design Studio 3: Design Concepts & Applications aims to recognize opportunities for designers to utilize digital fabrication technologies that leverage the possibilities of the technology in order to deliver stakeholder benefits. The course has a heavy emphasis on material exploration. Students work both individually and collaboratively towards comprehending the difference between fundamental innovation and incremental change in their work as well as beginning to articulate the relationship of manufacturing/fabrication processes to larger societal contexts. Students utilize and learn to modify machinery with jigs and templates to control outcomes and consider how various digital fabrication methods can be used to replicate precision multiples. The studio has a semester long project to design and produce a product and corresponding fabrication method.
